Heavenly Father Watches Over Us

What’s up everybody?! I hope that all of you are doing well! This week
has been great! I have loved all of the emails and letters that I’m
getting. Thank you so much for those.
Like I said earlier, this week has been wonderful. It turns out that
Mia moving to Alaska isn’t long term. She is moving back and she wants
to keep talking with us!! Thank you for all of the prayers that you
have said for the missionaries. I promise that they pay off.
Elder Smith and I found a new investigator this week. His name is
Brandon and he has been through a lot but he is starting to find some
peace in the gospel. I’ve been very blessed to be able to see that
change in him. We are teaching him this week so I hope that goes well.
So whenever we want WiFi for our iPads we have to go down to the
library in order to get it. The other day we were down there and they
had all this voting stuff set up. When we walked in they were on us.
For the whole time we were there they just hovered around us taking
turns asking us to vote. We weren’t sure if we could and we really
didn’t want to by the end so we kept telling them no. After a while
they changed their approach. They said that the senator who was there
would love to take a picture with us (I’m calling BS on that one),
but we did it just to get them away from us. The senator was an
interesting fellow. When we got within five feet of him the sickening
smell of coffee and alcohol filled our noses. He ended being pretty
nice but he kept asking us when we were going on our foreign missions.
We tried to explain how it all works but I don’t think he got it.
After the picture they made us fill out so much paperwork that we were
late for dinner and our lesson. The moral of the story is don’t get
distracted by man when God has work to be done.
We stopped by Daniel’s house this week. He’s the hippie I was talking
about a few weeks ago. He hasn’t read anything yet, but after we did
the all powerful and eternally binding pinkie swear he said he would
read it before this Tuesday.
Last Tuesday was our temple day and the Portland Temple is BEAUTIFUL!
I loved going! After the session Elder Smith and I were waiting for a
ride when we saw a man walk up and lower the flag to half mast. After
we asked our ride about it, we found out what happened. It was very sad
to hear that Richard G. Scott had passed away just an hour before
that. I can’t believe that we have lost three apostles just in the
last few months. They will be missed but the amazing thing about the
plan of salvation is that they are right where Heavenly Father wants
them to be. This is all part of His plan. He has a plan for each of us
and if we can follow that plan then we can find endless happiness in
the life to come.
I love you all and I’m so greatful for the support that you give me.
If you have written me a letter and I haven’t written you back I’m so
sorry but I’m working on it! I can’t wait to hear from you! Love ya!

The Blessings of Prayer
Hi everybody! I have loved hearing about all of the blessings you have seen in your lives! I hope you can continue to look for things to be thankful for.
Sorry this email is so long but a lot has happened this week.
I won’t lie, this week has been really hard. First of all I ate it twice on my bike in a busy intersection. Luckily everyone was laughing so hard that they had to stop so I wasn’t hit! Then both of the toilets in the apartment flooded on the same day at around the same time. The investigator who was making the most progress ended up moving to Alaska last week out of nowhere and none of our other investigators have been answering their doors or their phones. One day Elder Smith and I had every appointment cancel on us last minute. We didn’t have a dinner appointment so we ended up going to the store and we each bought a gallon of Tillamook ice cream and ate it in silence back home. It had been a long day. That night I was a little discouraged when I went to say my prayers. I asked Heavenly Father to help me know that I was making a difference.
The next day my companion and I where walking around and out of nowhere this lady starts running at us. We guessed she wasn’t LDS because she had a cross necklace on.
“Where can I get one of those T necklaces?”
“…A cross…?”
“A cross from where?”
Anyway, the lady runs up and gives us this huge hug. It kind of freaked me out at first because I had been told so many times in the MTC to never hug girls and now this older woman had just thrown herself on to me. After a long hug she let us go and told us that she was not of our faith but that we were helping so many people and we were making a huge difference. I was speechless for a moment. Heavenly Father had been really specific in answering my prayer. It was a testament to me that God does answer our prayers exactly how we need them to be answered.
The day after that we were riding through our apartment complex and this guy and girl were out smoking. Elder Smith and I waved and they asked us if we were missionaries. We slammed on our breaks and went to talk to them. We found out that they where brother and sister. The sister believed in God and the brother was agnostic. We shared a quick message with them about the Savior (3 Nephi 11) and talked about the temple. With tears in their eyes they looked at us and said that that was exactly what they needed to hear. It turns out that they had had some people in their family pass away and they needed comfort. They shook our hands and invited us back anytime.
I promise you brothers and sisters that if you will ask God for help and act with even the smallest bit of faith that he will perform miracles all around you. Don’t be afraid to be a missionary at all times. People need to hear this message and full time missionaries can’t do it alone. We need members to help us. When members are involved with teaching and befriending investigators that is when miracles happen.
Again I’m sorry this email is forever long but I hope you can know that what I said is true. I love you all so much. Thank you for your prayers and emails and letters. I can’t wait to hear from you! Love ya!

Missionary Life

Hello everyone! Thank you for all of the great emails that I have been
getting! I hope you have all been able to see the hand of the Lord in
your lives this past week. I know that I have.
First of all Mia, the investigator who came to church last Sunday, has
been doing great. We taught her on Wednesday and she loved it. She was
willing to ask questions when things didn’t make sense and she has
been able to recognize the spirit in her life. She has been prepared
by Heavenly Father for Elder Smith and I to teach.
Elder Smith and I are still getting a long great. We both love to
quote movies and videos so that’s been fun! (No one will ever replace
my dad when it comes to quoting movies though.) The only problem is
that he is very athletic… I on the other hand am not as athletic. He
used to mountain bike before he came out. I used to ride my bike up
and down the block like 10 years ago. So it has been an adventure to
try to remind myself that bikes have gears so I can kind of keep up
with him. Through mighty prayer and hard work I’m getting better
The members up here are great! We have had a dinner just about every
night this week. The other day we had a sister just drop off a pizza
and some fruit to our apartment. ( Sorry Firebird, my heart will
always be with you.) We ate the pizza really fast and then just kind
of sat and looked at the strange fruit. We had never seen it before.
We each took one and had a bite and they were delicious! It was like a
plum and a peach had a baby! We ate the whole case in just a few days.
My companion and I still don’t know what they are called so we have
been calling it the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
We may get cast down for that one but at least we think we’re funny.
Our week has been really successful though. We have worked hard and I
have seen that pay off. It has been hard for me to focus on my studies
but I am becoming more diligent. The Lord has kept his promise to put
the words into my mouth. I’m not even close to being a perfect servant
but he is still willing to allow me to be a part of his work. Heavenly
Father does love us and he will never give up on us.
I love you all and pray for you each night. Thank you for your prayers.

Hello everyone!!! I’m so glad to hear about all of your miracles!!! So
guess what food everyone loves out here? Pasta and salad…. Yay….
We have been well fed though. So my companion and I have had some
amazing miracles this week. First of all we are teaching a hippie
right now. He understands the Book of Mormon but he told us that he
won’t read it because he thinks Joseph Smith is full of crap. We had a
member with us at the time and he went Jeffery R. Holland on this guy.
It was awesome!!!! He is now reading the Book of Mormon!! Then on
Saturday we were checking on some investigators and no one was
answering. We were getting down hearted. We asked this woman for
directions and ended up talking for a while. My companion and I both
got the feeling to invite her to church the next day. With out a
second thought she agreed. We were both shocked. Then on Sunday she
actually came!!! Not only that but she asked and answered questions!
She was totally getting into it! We are teaching her in a few days.
Heavenly Father is looking out for us. He is looking out for you. I
will try to write more later because I’m in the middle of a nerf war!!
I love you all so much and I pray for you each day.

Hey Big Mama! I’m so glad that life is going well at home. I miss your ears so much. I mean I miss you so much! We have some new investigators because of our faith and fasting so the Lord is really helping me and I’m glad he is helping you. So I had a really dumb moment yesterday… My companion and were going to have dinner at someones house but it was on the other side of the freeway. We couldn’t find any way to get across. We saw a big field that would let us get to the other side by going under the freeway. I didn’t have a good feeling about it but I didn’t want to be the Weenie Greeny so we went across. We both forgot that Oregon is a lot wetter then Utah. At first we were doing really well. Our shoes were a little wet but we didn’t mind. Then we started to fall into deep pockets where the water came up to our waist!! At one point I fell over and landed right in to a blackberry bush. It hurt but we kept going. I looked down a few minutes later at my hand because I felt something and my hand was covered in blood. I had cut my hand open between my middle and ring fingers. Elder Smith and I got about half way through and realized that we were up a creek… So we went to our best option. Prayer. We said sorry to Heavenly Father and asked Him to help us out. We both new we had to turn back. We then had to call the members who were feeding us and ask for a ride. It was really embarrassing for both of us but the Lord was still willing to help us even though we didn’t listen to his warning the first time. That is the great thing about the Atonement. No matter how many times we don’t listen to Heavenly Father He will always listen to us. If we turn our hearts back to Christ He will lift us out of hard times. I love this gospel and I know it’s true. Thank you for the amazing emails and the example that you have been to me. I love you so much.
